Mixing it up at The Balloon Bar
The Balloon Bar at the Fuel Tank is fast becoming the go-to destination for a great night out in the Vale. Opened in June this year, it’s a kaleidoscope of colour, decorated for fun and frivolity.
Adding to the personality of the place is the selection of exquisite, exotic cocktails. Each is the creation of our guest mixologist Mycol Cavalieri. Mycol has been mixing it up professionally in some of Europe’s hottest nightspots for a number of years. Now we have persuaded him to apply his magic to the Balloon Bar’s tempting taste sensations.
Mycol explains: “I draw my inspiration for my mixes from Belvoir Castle, its sumptuous gardens and the Duke and Duchess too. I wanted to create cocktails that resonate with the local people, as well as visitors from near and far. Take Japanese Blossom. Its inspiration is the castle’s Japanese woodland and the extensive use of native Japanese and Chinese plants in this area of the garden. The combination of peach and elderflower, vodka and Mount Fuji bitters transport you to the land of the setting sun.
“Then there’s Duke’s Old Fashioned. Apparently it is one of the Duke of Rutland’s favourite tipples. I just hope I have done it justice with the fusion of the best bourbon, blueberries and cherries. Lip smackingly delicious. The Duchess’ Garden is an excitement of the finest sloe gin, blackberries, rose cordial and a touch of sparkling water.
“I’ve also attempted to bring the story behind the Balloon Bar to life, with my Up, Up & Away, Around the World and View of the Vale. All three pay homage to the otherworldliness of a serene flight in a hot air balloon. Think grapefruit vodkas, Havana Carat Blanca and 10-year-old Talisker, each mixed in such a way as to separate the every day from the extraordinary.”
