Back for our second year – twice the size and double the fun!

In May 2020, James and Peta launched Rutland Pumpkins – planting 8,000 pumpkin seeds on a field adjacent to James’ sister Abigail’s business, Live Lab, which provides grain, feedstuff and soil analysis for farmers across the country. We were delighted with how many people came to see us and cannot wait to see you all again this year!

Before planting our first pumpkins seeds in 2020, as a pumpkin patch novice Peta sought the advice of pumpkin patch veterans Rob and Jen, of Yorkshire Pumpkins. Just in the nick of time too, the pumpkin seeds were about to be drilled in the ground and Rob informed us that a maize drill would definitely not do for planting pumpkins! As you know, maize grows upwards, therefore the seeds can be planted quite close together – not so for pumpkins – which need ample room to spread their vines and tendrils! This was timely advice and we were able to work with local contractors to buy the requisite plates and drill the pumpkin seeds with enough room to grow.

Fast-forward to 2021 and we are excited to welcome you all back to the pumpkin patch, we’ve doubled the size this year, and we have spotted all of our pumpkin varieties growing on the patch. We’ve got miniature Jill be Little’s, small white Casperitas, knobbly and warty Knucklehead pumpkins, and your traditional carving varieties like Wicked and Early King. The Early King can reach up to 12 kilograms in weight, so they really do require a wheelbarrow to be carted around – we’ll also have lots more wheelbarrows available to borrow this year!

We’re welcoming back Roaming Giraffe events this year, who will be serving up delicious cakes, as well as their divine loaded hot chocolates – perfect for a chilly autumn outing! This year, for the first time, we’ll be joined by Amo La Pizza, who will make sure you don’t go hungry – we’ll have undercover seating too. We’ll also be joined by Shona’s Fabulous Faces, who will be on hand to make sure your little ones (and big ones!) look spooktacular! We cannot wait to see you all at the patch in October !

GHOULISH GOLF AND WICKEDLY WEIRD WILDLIFE TRAIL

This Halloween join us for a game of ghoulish golf and our wickedly weird wildlife trail.

With spooky surprises at every turn there’s eerie fun for everyone at Rutland Water this October.

And, all little monsters taking part will walk away with a spooktacular reward.
