Hanwell Wine Estate
Melton Rd, Melton Mowbray LE14 3QG, UK

One of our most popular workshops we host here at Hanwell Wine Estate, John Hollins will be hosting a two-day bentwood chair making workshop, introducing you to the tools and techniques required for this traditional woodcraft. Working alongside a small group, John will demonstrate how to hand-craft hazel, bending and cutting it to form a stunning garden seat.

All materials will be provided and the workshop includes a two-course homemade lunch served with local wine. At the end of the two days you will have created your own bentwood chair to take home with you. Alternatively, we can arrange to deliver your chair locally if transport is a problem.

“It’s amazing that in two days people can learn how to make a chair from hazel rods. The bentwood chair making workshop is a good introduction to rustic woodcraft and it’s always a sociable two days with a fantastic atmosphere.” John Hollis.

About John

Based in his Nottinghamshire workshop, John has been making bespoke rustic furniture for homes and gardens for over 18 years. Using traditional greenwood methods and tools, he works with locally sourced native British broadleaf timber such as oak, ash, sweet chestnut, willow and hazel. All the willow and hazel is coppiced from two small woodlands managed by John who, as well as running workshops and woodcraft courses, runs many local community projects.

Dementia-friendly swimming sessions now available at Cotgrave Leisure Centre

Weekly dementia friendly swimming sessions are now available at Cotgrave Leisure Centre to help individuals and carers enjoy exercise in comfortable surroundings.

Individuals, and families and friends who help sufferers can enjoy sessions every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm.

There is no need to book, just turn up and enjoy the session and to help launch the class, the first six weeks are free of charge for all attendees.

The Dementia Swimming Project is part of Rushcliffe Borough Council’s and Lex Leisure’s wider health strategy with sessions designed to create a safe and friendly swimming environment.

Robert Linthwaite, Lex Leisure’s centre manager at Cotgrave Leisure Centre, said: “Dementia swimming sessions build confidence for the individual and their carer – and in a welcoming environment that has great health benefits.

“It’s all here to make it easy and accessible to enjoy the activity and once people visit us we are confident they will return.

“Anybody with a memory issue can come to the dementia swimming sessions, it has immense benefits for both the carer and the swimmer.”

The classes are led by swimmers and carers with trained staff attending poolside to offer guidance and support to enjoy a gentle exercise and social session in the pool.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s deputy leader, Debbie Mason, said: “Within Rushcliffe, approximately 1% of our residents are living with dementia.

“As a council, we want to ensure they are supported with wellbeing opportunities wherever we can.

“The benefits of swimming are well publicised both in terms of physical health and emotional wellbeing, but it has also been shown to improve the quality of life of those living with dementia.

“This is why we are partnering with Lex Leisure to offer dementia-friendly swimming at Cotgrave Leisure Centre.”

There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with one in six over the age of 80 now having a form of the condition.

For more information on the Dementia Swimming Project visit www.swimming.org/dementiafriendly, contact Cotgrave Leisure Centre on 0115 989 2916 or email Cotgrave@LexLeisure.org.uk.

FRIDAY 8th February

The Noels Arms: ‘Krusty Whiskas’ 9pm

‘Krusty Whiskas’ are appearing at the Grapes in Melton Mowbray on Friday the 8th of Feb. Based in Ely Camb’s. This three-piece covers band fronted by eighties recording artist, John Barry will give you a night to remember with songs from the Everly’s, Stones, Beatles, Foundations and a host of other names. Songs to remember, dance to and sing along with! This group formed less than two years ago and has taken the Ely area by storm and is ready to spread its wings your way! See them on Facebook and our many clips on you tube. The seeds of Krusty Whiskas were sewn when local music legend John Barry attended a Fenland Jam session at the YPL Music Rooms in Littleport. Here, he met Lorry Spry, and Dom Miller (also of Factory Girl).

Together, they started jamming classic tracks, with a great reception from the local music community. Eventually, they were released into the World as the John Barry Trio, with their Debut gig at Witchfest 2012.

Eventually, Lorry & Dom got fed up of being calling John, so after Holly the Terrier accidentally stuck her head in a pot of custard, Krusty Whiskas was officially formed as a group in September 2012.

Join us for a spectacular pageant of spring bulbs, beginning in early February with wonderful snowdrops, Cyclamen coum, and Crocus tommasinianus, continuing through March and early April with drifts of Lent lilies and our unique collection of heritage daffodils (including rare Edwardian varieties), winter aconites and snake’s head fritillaries until May.

The spring bulb pageant was started in the 1950s by Claire’s grandparents Ralph and Antonia Jarvis. Claire’s father Antony Jarvis and late mother Victoria continued the work and Antony estimates that he has planted or moved 150,000 bulbs in the last 25 years. Claire added a further 5000 snowdrops to the nature trail with some money she inherited from her maternal Grandmother Cecily Mathias. ‘Cecily’s Snowdrops’ have now been enjoyed by visitors since 2005.

Don’t forget Mothering Sunday – 31 March

Bulbs are a spectacular feature at Doddington. Our Gardens are full of Spring bulbs and filled with drifts of golden daffodils during March. Treat your mum to a gorgeous stroll in the Gardens, a spot of retail therapy and perhaps even some delicious tea and homemade cake in our Café.

Doddington Hall
Doddington Hall, Doddington, Lincoln LN6 4RU, UK

Gardens open 10 February – 31 March, SUNDAYS ONLY, 11am – 4.30pm. Garden admission applies: Adult £7, Child 3.50, Family £18.

Tickets available on arrival at the Gatehouse. Historic Houses & RHS member cards accepted.
